CMDCM (SW) Donald A. Charbonneau, USN

Command Master Chief, Commander, Navy Regional Maintenance Center and Director, Surface Ship Maintenance and Modernization

Command Master Chief Donald A. Charbonneau is a native of Southbridge, Massachusetts. He enlisted into the Navy in October 1988, and completed recruit training and seaman apprenticeship training in Great Lakes, Illinois.

In March 1989, he reported to ASSAULT CRAFT UNIT FIVE, where he deployed for the first time to the Western Pacific onboard USS COMSTOCK (LSD-45), Detachment Delta during Operation Desert Shield.

In October 1992, he transferred to USS CAMDEN (AOE-2) where he was assigned to Weapons Division Ammunition Administrator and Work Center Supervisor and completed two deployments to the Western Pacific.

In February 1998, he reported to Navy Recruiting District Phoenix as a Second Class Petty Officer, assigned to NRS Bell Canyon as a Canvasser Recruiter. 

In August 2001, he reported back to sea aboard USS OLDENDORF (DD-972) assuming duties as Leading Petty Officer of Combat Systems Gunnery Division and command Small Arms Marksmanship/Force Protection Instructor.  He qualified and served as a Vessel Board Search and Seizure Team Leader and deployed to South America in supporting of Counter Narcotics Operations.  In 2003, he advanced to Chief Petty Officer, decommissioned OLDENDORF, and conducted a crew swap deployment with USS FLETCHER (DD-992), to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.  

In June 2004, he reported to USS SQUALL (PC-7) where he was assigned as Weapons Department Leading Chief Petty Officer and conducted a crew swap deployment to the Western Pacific onboard the USS CHINOOK (PC-9).

In August 2005, he reported back to Navy Recruiting District Phoenix for another tour of recruiting assigned to Navy Recruiting Station Christown Mall where he was selected to Senior Chief Petty Officer. He was re-assigned to Advanced Programs as the Division Leading Chief Petty Officer and was selected to serve in the Command Senior Chief program.

In August 2009, he completed Senior Enlisted Academy class #26 and Command Master Chief course #63 and reported to Mine Counter Measure (MCM) Crew Persistent where he assumed the duties and responsibility as the Command Senior Chief aboard USS DEVASTATOR (MCM-6) stateside and conducted two crew swap deployments to the USS SCOUT (MCM-8) home ported in Bahrain where he was selected to Master Chief Petty Officer.

In May 2011, he reported to USS WAYNE E. MEYER (DDG 108), as the Command Master Chief. He completed two consecutive deployments to the 5th and 7th Fleet in support of South China Sea Patrols and Somalia coastal water patrol. 

In December 2014 he reported back to Naval Recruiting District PHOENIX as the Command Master Chief for a third tour of recruiting.

In January 2018, Master Chief Charbonneau reported to Navy Recruiting Command, Millington, Tennessee, and served as the Flag Command Master Chief.

In January 2020, he reported and is presently serving as Flag Command Master Chief over Navy Region Maintenance Center and Surface Ships Maintenance and Modernization.

His personal awards include Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (10), Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, and various Joint/Navy Unit and Campaign Awards.
