21st Century

As the world recognized the dawning of a new century, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard celebrated 200 years of distinguished service to the Nation and the Navy. The Shipyard added to it's proud reputation by earning the Meritorious Unit Commendation, or MUC, in 2005. The MUC recognized the Shipyard for meritorious service from September 11, 2001 to August 30, 2004. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard accomplishments achieved during that period included completion of six major submarine availabilities early, exceeding Net Operation Results financial goals, reducing injuries by more than 50 percent, and exceeding the Secretary of Defense’s Fiscal Year 2006 Stretch Goal for lost workday compensation rates two years early. 2000 - New powder coating facility opens in Building 285.

2000 - Shipyard celebrates 200 years of service to the nation.

2001 - Shipyard officially completes the installation of its new energy efficient gas turbine generator.

2002 - Shipyard breaks ground on wetland project.

2003 - Workers introduced to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).

2004 - Shipyard delivers six ships in a row back to the Fleet, setting records along the way.

2005 - Shipyard celebrates the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Portsmouth.

2005 - Shipyard celebrates certification as an Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star Site - March 2005.

2005 - Shipyard receives the Meritorious Unit Commendation.


2006 - Shipyard receives the New Hampshire Business of the Year award for manufacturing/ technology.

2007 - Shipyard receives recertification in Occupational Safety and Health's Voluntary Protection Program - October 2007

2008 - Shipyard stands up Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Detachment - San Diego, February 2008.

2008
- USS New Hampshire (SSN 778) commissioned October 25, 2008 at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

2009
- Completed first Docking Selected Restricted Availability at San Diego detachment, USS Hampton (SSN 767), two weeks early!

2010
- Integrated new robotic metal inert gas (MIG) welder into the valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) battery cabinet fabrication process, reducing production welding time by up to 83 percent!

2010
- Earned a NAVSEA Total Ownership Cost Award for the implementation of consumable material vending machines.

2010 - Portsmouth Naval Shipyard earns GOLD level achievement for the Secretary of the Navy Energy Awards by reducing energy and water consumption - August 19, 2010.

2010
- USS Virginia (SSN 774) arrived for the first-of-its-class major maintenance availability - September 1, 2010.

2010
- New Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) School facility dedicated in honor of retired Rear Admiral Jeremiah A. Denton Jr. As a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission's decision to close Brunswick Naval Air Station, the SERE School relocated its academic facility to the shipyard - September 30, 2010.

2011 - Portsmouth Naval Shipyard's Code 205 performs first ever rescue certification on a Russian submarine - May 30, 2011.

2011
- Delivered USS Helena (SSN 725) as the fastest engineered overhaul (EOH) ever completed at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard - June 2, 2011!

2011 - U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion ribbon cutting at its new facility. As a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission's decision to close Brunswick Naval Air Station, the U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion New England Headquarters relocated its facility to the shipyard - July 28, 2011.

2011 - Named the overall winner for the industrial category of the 2011 Secretary of the Navy Energy and Water Management Awards - October 12, 2011.

2011 - Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Detachment-San Diego completed the USS San Francisco (SSN 711) pre-inactivation restricted availability (PIRA) on-time and $2.5 million under budget - December 17, 2011! 


2012 - Delivered USS San Juan (SSN 751) engineered overhaul (EOH) eight days early - February 11, 2012.

- Named the Environmental Restoration-Installation winner for the fiscal year 2011 Secretary of the Navy Environmental Awards competition - March 20, 2012.

2013 - Named Environmental Restoration-Installation winner for the fiscal year 2012 of the Chief of Naval Operations Environmental Awards competition - February 21, 2013. 

2013 - Named the Safety Ashore-Large Industrial category winner for the 2012 Chief of Naval Operations Safety Award competition - April 2013. 

2013 - Shipyard receives second recertification in Occupational Safety and Health's Voluntary Protection Program - June 2013


2013 - Shipyard earned recognition from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a regional leader for reducing the shipyard's environmental footprint. PNS was given a regional award in the leadership category - June 2013

2013 - USS Pittsburgh (SSN 720) off-yard pre-inactivation restricted availability (PIRA) delivered on-time and under budget - August 2, 2013.

2014 - Named Sustainability winner for the fiscal year 2013 Chief of Naval Operations Safety Award competition.

2014 - USS Topeka (SSN 754) engineered overhaul (EOH) undocked three weeks early - May 2014.

2014 - USS California (SSN 781) docking availability completed two weeks early - June 2014.

2014 - USS Springfield (SSN 761) off-yard docking continuous maintenance availability (DCMAV) delivered one day early and $3.4 million under budget - September 2014.

2015 - Named Environmental Restoration-Installation and Cultural Resources Management winner for the fiscal year 2014 Secretary of the Navy Environmental Awards competition.

2015 - USS Dallas (SSN 700) off-yard pre-inactivation restricted availability (PIRA) delivered $6 million under budget - June 2015.

2015 - USS Alexandria (SSN 757) engineered overhaul (EOH) completed two weeks early and $9 million under budget - August 2015.

2016 - Named the Environmental Restoration-Installation and Natural Resources Conservation winner for the fiscal year 2015 Secretary of the Navy Environmental Awards competition - March 11, 2016.

2016 - ex-Norfolk inactivation completed $2 million under budget with crew released two weeks early - February 2016.

2016 - Earned SECDEF Award for Depot Maintenance Excellence for USS Alexandria.

2016 - USS Oklahoma City (SSN 723) docking selected restricted availability (DSRA) completed on-time and $4 million under budget - November 2016.

2017 - USS Providence (SSN 719) pre-inactivation restricted availability (PIRA) delivered on budget and 23 days early - April 2017.
